Science Poems

The Mad Scientist
Bill Buczinsky's poetic graphic of a dead animal skull with jars of science experiments
Bill Buczinsky's poetic graphic of a mad scientist
The Mad Scientist isn’t mad at all,
In fact, he’s insanely happy!
With his beakers bubbling, electricity flying-
Life's an experiment and the fun is in trying.

Pour some gunk in a petri dish,
Atoms collide, molecules miss.
Watch out for the bang and the hiss!
Where did it start? When will it end?
Light, time, your mind can bend.

The Mad Scientist isn’t mad at all,
In fact, he’s insanely happy!
From Einstein to Edison,
From robotics to medicine,

From botany to astronomy to nanomicrobiology-
Analyzing, synthesizing, hypothesizing, categorizing-
It’s not madness in his eyes you’re seeing,
It’s wonder, awe and the surprise of being!

So let him be to his bubbling beakers;
His microscope, test tubes and little lab creatures.
And on your way out, before you say goodbye,
Turn on the switch, and turn it up high.
Don’t be afraid when the sparks start flying-

Life is an experiment and the fun is in trying.

Writing a Science Poem

Step 1: Select a subject, are you interested in plants, animals, construction, medicine, dinosaurs, or planets?

            Example: I love plants.

Step 2: Get specific.  Plants include oak trees, sunflowers, tomatoes, and all kinds of boysenberries.

            Example: I especially like sunflowers.

Step 3: Now start creating a list of words that go with your topic.  Include all kinds of words; descriptive words, action words, feeling words.  Look up your subject and include technical and scientific terms.

                              Seeds
Stars                                        Fertilize
                              Roots                                 Tall                                     Petal
                              Earth and Soil                  Summer                             Loyalty
